“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

I painted this lovely walkway lined with daffodils on location at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. This is one of my favorite places to paint in Richmond because truly it is beautiful in every season. But springtime in the gardens, when all of the lovely colors emerge after a muted gray winter, is truly a gift for the eyes, not to mention the soul.
