“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
I painted this enchanting scene on location in April when I visited Norfolk Botanical Garden. One thing I loved about this garden was the way the outdoor “rooms” were arranged to delight and surprise the wanderer. This little garden was tucked in off the beaten path. While it bore no name on the garden map, it was one of my favorite discoveries. It reminded me of a perfect little fairy garden, and it was filled with sweet fragrance. I was hot and tired from wandering and looking for a painting site in the shade, and I found it in spades. Lovely flowers notwithstanding, what really drew me in was the dappled light across the green bench, beckoning the visitor to rest for a spell and drink it all in.
