“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. About the painting:
I painted this piece on location on a very foggy afternoon in Callaway. The clouds and mist settled atop the Blue Ridge mountains and into the valley, making it challenging but interesting to try and capture the soft edges and close values in this scenic view. I enjoyed the way this old weathered barn was tucked in and nestled in the hillside, framed by wildflowers and the foggy mountains.
