“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. I painted this charming treehouse on location at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden during a plen air event that took place during National Garden Week. I have spent many a happy summer days exploring this magical garden with my young daughter, and I thought it might be time to finally capture the spot in paint. We always loved climbing up in the treehouse, where, in her younger days I would to pick my daughter up to peer out the windows and down upon the beautiful lily pond and grounds below. We loved pretending we were Queen and Princess in a magical castle looking out over our land. While she has almost grown too big for me to lift her now, we still make the climb to “our castle” whenever we visit this wonderful place.
