“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

I painted this on location when I went painting in with a local plein air group (Virginia Plein Air Painters) to Gari Melcher’s home and studio in Falmouth, Virginia. Gari Melchers was a successful portrait painter and impressionist who lived at his estate until 1916. It was so inspiring to visit his estate and enjoy his paintings, and magnificent studio. What gems we have in Virginia! Oh and I did a little painting of my own too .This was the walkway on the lovely grounds, leading up to the Belmont estate.
