“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. About the painting:
I painted this on location in my own back yard. While I enjoy painting in the fancier botanical gardens and parks in my area, I do have a little cutting garden along both sides of my fence. I admit, that while I love to visit the gardens of “the pros,” sometimes it is a little hard to leave my private oasis. In the summertime when the days get hot quickly, there is nothing more satisfying, and more of a refuge, than to appreciate (and paint!) the efforts of my own labor, however simple or humble they may be.
