“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
I painted this on location on a spring day in April at a beautiful Marina in Topping, Virginia. Topping is part of a number of small towns located on the Northern Neck, popular with boaters, crabbers, and oyster fisherman. This region has lovely marinas as well as numerous wetlands that make it a great place to paint.
