“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

I painted this along the Blue Ridge Parkway during the Floyd Plein Air Festival. August is a beautiful time of year to visit Floyd, for the wildflowers alone. It isn’t the first time I painted this scene and I hope it won’t be the last! I really love the luscious color amidst all of the green this time of year. All of the wildflowers provide a beautiful sanctuary for the butterflies, and for the human eye as well!
