“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
I painted this during the 2019 Floyd Plein Air Festival in Floyd, VA . I’ve always loved Queen Anne’s Lace, even though it is just a “weed“, and I enjoyed the flowers combined with the bales of hay, both so prevalent in the countryside of Virginia summers.
