“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
Whenever I visit Richmond's Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens to do a little painting, it is hard to resist the urge to visit one of my favorite painting spots, Grace Arents Garden. No matter how many times I paint at this spot, there always seems to be some lovely new surprise. On this particular visit, the garden didn't disappoint. The garden was "graced" with potted palms, which gave the already beautiful setting a Victorian splendor that transported me back in time.
