“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
I painted this piece during a quick draw event called “Paint Main” in Gloucester, Virginia. The one-day event was open to local artists and held alongside the prestigious Gloucester Plein Air invitational that hosts talented artists from around the country for a week-long festival. To my delight and surprise, my painting garnered the first place prize in the community artist category, which awarded me the opportunity to be an invited artist in the subsequent year’s event, as well as very nice cash prize.
