“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
I painted this on a beautiful day in September at Historic Tuckahoe Plantation. Tuckahoe is a National Historic Landmark most well known for being the boyhood home of Thomas Jefferson. It has lovely gardens, but on this day I opted to paint the sweeping view from the South Lawn of the main house which overlooks the valley covered in mustard-yellow wildflowers and just a hint of the James River beyond.
