“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. About the painting:
I painted this on location on an early spring day at Maymont Park. Maymont is known for its beautiful gardens, rolling hills, magnificent trees, and lovely stone buildings from the Gilded Age bequeathed to the city by Mr. and Mrs. James A. Dooley. It is a favorite spot for many locals, including those of the feathered variety!
