“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
I painted this on location in early October at a paint out in Tappahannock, Virginia. During the event we painters had run of several fine properties both public and private. I loved this lovely garden in the courtyard of the old kitchen at the historic property of Kendall Farm. I was so charmed by this setting that I even included the little yellow butterflies dancing around the butterfly bush by the fence.
