About the painting:
This large studio painting is inspired by a plein air trip I took to Floyd, VA for the biannual Floyd Plein Air festival. There were so many wildflowers blooming during that trip, including one of my favorite mountain flowers, wild chicory. This flower is also abundant on the Richmond roadsides near home, but for some reason it always reminds me of the Blue Ridge mountains. I actually painted this scene on location a little later in the morning. I didn’t get my gear organized quickly enough to capture the tremendous sky, so I just took some photos of the remains of fleeting color and enjoyed the moment.
