“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
The weather heats up fast in our Virginia Summers, so for this on-the-spotter I sought out the shade by the James River, at a branch of the wonderful James River Park system called Pony Pasture in Richmond Virginia. I can never decide which aspect of this topography fascinates me more: the weathered rocks or the weathered trees, so usually I end up including both!
