“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
I painted this during the 2019 Plein Air Chincoteague event. Chincoteague is a charming Virginia town on the inter-coastal water way, close to Maryland. This was my first visit to this area and I found myself completely enamored with the Assateague Island National Seashore. Not only does this protected land have beautiful sunsets and wetland vistas, it is teeming with wildlife, from the famous wild ponies to waterfowl, wading birds, and many other migratory birds and wildlife and plant species.
