This painting was inspired by a series of plein air paintings I did in the fall down at the James River Park's "Pony Pasture" in Richmond Virginia. This section of the park was so-named because at one time the land-owners in the area would let their ponies graze along the river bank. Today the four-legged visitors are somewhat smaller and generally restrained by leashes. Autumn may just be my favorite season to paint down there. Aside from the beautiful fall colors, I also love that many of the sunbathers have moved along at this time, and the setting becomes more contemplative and restful.
