About the painting:
I started this painting on location at the end of the Floyd Plein Air, a juried plein air festival in Floyd County. This was just after Hurricaine Helene blew through wreaking havoc and calamity on our southern neighbors. We were more fortunate in Floyd, as it only managed to flood some roads and knock the power out for a few days. This beautiful opalescent sky emerged at the tail end of my incredibly windy and frustrating painting session. So as the sky lit up, I wiped down what I had started and attempted to capture the beauty that emerged, only managing to get a rough block-in before the light disappeared. I finished the painting in the studio based largely on my memory and experience.
