Several times I have had the great fortune to travel to Italy, and it has always held a special place in my heart. On our last visit to Tuscany, we stayed in the lovely valley of Montalcino. This was the stunning view in the morning just outside of my window.

Bellagio has to be one of the prettiest. This painting shows a view at the pinnacle of an afternoon hike in Bellagio, looking down over the harbor.

This painting is of the beautiful lake town of village of Varenna in Lake Como, Italy. Varenna is know as the "Pearl of the Lake", and for good reason. The terra cotta buildings and sunny harbor make the village gleam and glisten like a precious gem.

The beautiful covered bridge that connected two building was one that prisoners would cross to meet their fate. Today it is filled with happy tourists and gondoliers enjoying the unique beauty that is Venice.

Venice is memorable for so many reasons. Its beautiful grand canals with its majestic palazzi and sparkling golden light dazzle and impress all who visit. But some of my favorite views were the intimate ones; quiet narrow byways accented by a few well-placed flower boxes and that beautiful Venetian light spotlighting the water and architecture just so.

Of all of the places I have visited so far in Italy, Lake Como in general, and Bellagio in particular, hovers near the top of my list for achieving that dazzling combination of natural and man-made beauty. The trifecta of pre-Alpine mountains, deep blue waters and classic Italian architecture dripping with flowers is pretty hard to beat.

About the painting:

This painting is of a little cafe set upon a small pier in the fishing village of Pescallo. Pescallo rests just at the foot of Bellagio, another lovely Lake Como town. Though small, Pescallo is ripe with painting subject matter. I visited there several times when I stayed in Bellagio. In fact, I had a great view of Pescallo right from my Bellagio hotel balcony. Imagine having a view like this one to enjoy over your morning coffee!

About the painting:

Whenever I travel, I often find myself painting and photographing windows and doors. To me they suggest a both a kind of intimacy and a bit of mystery. In Italy many people take great care in dressing their windows and doorways with pots of beautiful flowers. Shutters and doors are often painted a lovely bright color, which over time fades and mellows from exposure to the elements. This little red door surrounded by a potted wall garden caught my eye in Pienza, a beautiful hill town in the Val d'Orcia and the home of Pecorino cheese!

About the Painting:

This is a view of the Sant' Antimo Abbey, set in the majestic Montalcino valley in southern Tuscany. I had the great pleasure of visiting there in the month of June, when the wildflowers were going, well, wild! This is wine and olive country. You can visit the Abbey on a daytrip from Montalcino, and picnic in the shade of the Abbey, or stop by a nearby vineyard to taste the tremendous wines of the region, such as the Rosso or Brunello di Montalcino. Heavenly indeed!
