Being from Virginia, the South is where I call home. So it is a subject I naturally find myself painting again and again. The Southern landscape offers rounded mountains, beautiful springtime blossoms, winding wetlands and romantic palms. While I love to travel, I'm finding I don't have to go far to find wonderful subjects to paint.

About the Painting: This painting was inspired by a weeklong trip I took to Cape Hatteras. The first day we arrived at our cottage, it was quite overcast and gray. All day we remained hopeful that the weather forcast would prove to be true and that a clearing would take place by nightfall. Our hopes were realized at dusk that evening, as a procession of dark billowing clouds paraded across a magnificent sky painted with large strokes of brilliant color. As we stood on our balcony gazing at the spectacular view towards the sound, I noted how the backlit beach houses anchored the scene with their simple dark shapes. I hope you enjoy this piece as much as I enjoyed painting it.
