France is such an amazing country filled with diversity and great beauty. The region of Provence abounds with fields of poppies, sunflowers, and lavender bursting with fragrance and color. Everywhere you turn, there are hundreds of paintings, waiting to be made! Equally beautiful is the region of Normandy, full of soft rolling hills, willow trees and the biggest roses I've ever seen! I had the great privilege in 2003 to paint in Giverny en plein air. I received special permission to paint in Monet's garden on a day when it is closed to the general public, and the experience is one that I will never forget!

About the Painting:

This is a plein air painting (done on site) I did at a special location in Southern France. Abbaye Nouvelle is the site of a beautiful old 13th century abbey. While partilally in ruins, the abbey is fortunately undergoing restoration. I was lucky enough to be at this site when the local community was holding its "Fete des Plants" (plant festival and sale). I could not have thought of a more beautiful location; at the foot of a beautiful structure with pathways lined with irises in bloom. I hope you enjoy viewing this painting as much as I enjoyed painting it!
