Provence Paintings
Art of the French Countryside
France
is such an amazing country filled with diversity and great beauty. The
region of Provence abounds with fields of poppies, sunflowers, and lavender
bursting with fragrance and color. Everywhere you turn, there are hundreds
of paintings, waiting to be made! Equally beautiful is the region of Normandy,
full of soft rolling hills, willow trees and the biggest roses I've ever
seen! I had the great privilege in 2003 to paint in Giverny en plein air.
I received special permission to paint in Monet's garden on a day when
it is closed to the general public, and the experience is one that I will
never forget!

About
the Painting:
I painted this piece on the heels of a springtime
painting trip to the beautiful Lot Valley in southern France.
I stayed in an old
converted monastery surrounded by the most beautiful
countryside, and on many mornings a lovely fog settled in
the valley giving everything a soft hazy glow. The structure
is called a "pigeonnaire", or pigeon house, and
it is a very common feature in this part of the country. Lovely
stone structures sit like monuments in the pastures and meadows
because through the ages pigeons have been very valued here.
They served, as messengers, as a source of fertilizer for
the soil (via their droppings) and as a source of food. I
hope you enjoy viewing this painting as much as I enjoyed
making it!
