About the painting:
In the summer of 2017 I was fortunate to have received an artist's residency in Vinalhaven Maine. Vinalhaven is off of the coast of Rockland and is Maine's largest island. There are many places on the island that are protected by the Vinalhaven Land Trust and the state of Maine. Lane's Island was one of my favorite for its spectacular views on three sides. There was so much beauty to experience that it was really hard to decide if I should spend my time exploring or painting. One morning I decided to do a bit of hiking on one of the trails and I'm so glad I did. I came upon this gorgeous view of Rugosa roses hugging the coastline, and determined to return that afternoon to see what I could capture. This painting, completed during the golden hours just before evening, is the result.
