What is a GICLEÉ?

GICLEÉ prints are digitally printed reproductions of original works of art. GICLEÉ (pronounced "zhee-clay") is a French-derived term meaning "to spray on" or "to spray ink"). Each print begins with an image capture in high resolution by direct digital scan of the original artwork. Images are then sent directly to a high resolution printer. The technology provides incredible detail and brilliant color on surfaces such as fine art cotton rag paper and fine art canvas. Third party tested life-span estimates of these GICLEÉ prints made with wide-gamut pigmented inks on archival substrates are estimated to last over 130 years without noticeable fade under typical home or office lighting. It is recommended that collectors treat their GICLEÉ prints the same as would an original watercolor painting. It is advisable, for instance, to display art on paper under glass, and to never expose any type of art work to prolonged direct sunlight.

What is a Limited Edition?

A limited edition is a series of identical prints, limited in printing to a certain number of pieces. The artist determines the size of the edition, and hand signs and numbers each print. An example of limited edition numbering is 1/150, meaning the example is the first print of 150 produced in the edition. Prices of limited editions usually exceed the prices of open edition prints or posters, because not only is the supply limited, but the quality is exceptionally high. My limited editions use heavy weight art paper or fine art canvas, as well as archival inks for the printing. Not only is the quality of the materials high, but the prints go through many hours of proofing in an artist-printer collaboration to ensure rich, vibrant color and accurate color matching.

What is an Artist's Proof?

An artist's proof is a small group of prints set aside for an artist to use as she sees fit. Artist's proofs are generally signed and marked A/P, indicating the artist's proof instead of the numbered edition. Often the proofs differ in some way from the other prints in an edition. For instance they may be of a different size or printed on a different substrate than the other edition prints. Since the quantity of proofs are usually small in number, they often draw a higher price than other impressions.

What is a Certificate of Authenticity?

A Certificate of Authenticity accompanies each of Jennifer Young's GICLEÉ prints. The certificate states all of details that are relevant to the print and to the edition.
There may often be an image that is reproduced in more than one limited edition. For example, a painting may be reproduced as a GICLEÉ on paper with an edition of 150 in size 15 x 18, and also as a GICLEÉ on canvas with an edition of 75 in size 20 x 24. The overall number of editions released, as well as the number and substrate of that particular print are fully disclosed on the certificate of authenticity.
